Teacher of the Year

Michelle Richards - 2027 Castle Hills Elementary Teacher of the Year

Michelle Richards is a dedicated Fourth Grade Special Education Teacher at Castle Hills Elementary School, where she has served for the past four years. A graduate of Wilmington University, Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science in Education with honors in 2022, along with her Special Education certification.

Michelle’s approach to teaching is grounded in empathy, differentiation, and a deep belief that every student can succeed when given the right support. She is passionate about creating a classroom environment where students feel safe, valued, and empowered to take risks. By breaking down complex concepts into meaningful, accessible steps, she helps students build both academic skills and personal confidence.

Driven by the belief that teaching extends beyond the classroom, Michelle prioritizes strong relationships with her students and their families. Whether she is attending students’ extracurricular events, connecting with families, or offering guidance outside of school hours, she strives to be a consistent and supportive presence in her students’ lives. Her goal is for every student to leave her classroom not only stronger academically, but also confident in who they are and what they can achieve.

In addition to her classroom role, Michelle serves as an Enrichment Coordinator, Equity Team Member, and Rebranding Committee Member, demonstrating her commitment to building a more inclusive and engaging school community. She embodies the Colonial School District’s “Power of WE” by being bold in her advocacy, inclusive in her practices, and authentic in her connections with students and families.

Michelle’s journey to education was inspired by her passion for child development and her desire to make a lasting impact. Originally pursuing psychology, she realized the classroom offered the most direct and meaningful opportunity to support students every day. This perspective continues to shape her holistic approach to teaching, focusing on both academic growth and emotional well-being.

Outside of the classroom, Michelle has been involved in the gymnastics world for over 20 years, first as an athlete and later as a coach for students ages 3 to 18. She is also a proud Colonial parent and an active member of the New Castle community, bringing a personal and authentic connection to the families she serves.

Michelle believes that “a classroom is more than just a place to learn—it is a community where every student deserves to feel seen, safe, and truly included.”
